Government’s inaction on climate change fails to recognize public health emergency: B.C. Green leader
VICTORIA, B.C. – As British Columbians struggle to cope with the current heat wave, B.C. Greens Leader Sonia Furstenau, MLA for Cowichan Valley says the government’s failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions underscores its failure to treat climate change as a public health emergency.
B.C. Greens respond to findings of unmarked graves on grounds of former Marieval (Cowessess) Residential School
VICTORIA, B.C. – Cowessess First Nation has announced the findings of 751 unmarked graves at Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan. The B.C. Green Caucus today, issued the following statement:
“My heart is with those who were found and their families. This is another devastating affirmation of the horrific reality of residential schools,” said Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands and a member of the Tsartlip First Nation. “An estimated 150,000 children attended these deplorable institutions over more than a hundred years - we know that this is just the beginning of this chapter of uncovering.

Furstenau introduces petition with 30,000 signatures – 12 years after Horgan’s own petition to protect old-growth forests
VICTORIA B.C. – Today in the legislature, B.C. Green Leader Sonia Furstenau introduced a B.C. Green Party petition to protect old-growth forests with 30,151 signatures from British Columbians.
This comes 12 years after then-opposition MLA John Horgan and six other B.C. NDP MLAs introduced petitions to protect old-growth forests and ban raw log exports in 2009. Since 2009, BC NDP MLAs have introduced at least 12 separate old-growth petitions, including twice in 2019 while in government.
Furstenau responds to report on Horgan’s worsening fossil fuel subsidy record
VICTORIA, B.C. – B.C. Green Leader Sonia Furstenau, MLA for Cowichan Valley says the BC NDP’s worsening record on fossil fuel subsidies is undermining B.C.’s opportunity to build a clean economy. The report released today by Stand.earth shows that the Horgan government increased fossil fuel subsidies by 8.3% in 2020-21 and has raised subsidies to more than double what they were when the NDP took power in 2017.
