Protecting healthcare from privatization

After months of advocacy, our calls to protect our universal healthcare system have led to real action.

We have been raising serious questions about two-tiered healthcare offered by private, for-profit companies like Telus Health for almost a year.

There is a lot of evidence that they have been charging British Columbians thousands of dollars for basic healthcare when those services are offered (for free) as part of our universal healthcare system.

Furstenau: Immediate expansion of safe supply needed to save lives

VICTORIA, B.C. – Today, the BC Coroners Service reported that in October 179 people died from suspected drug poisonings in British Columbia. Sonia Furstenau, leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley, has issued the following statement:

"Premier David Eby needs to make clear to British Columbians what he intends to do to address the toll of the illicit toxic drug supply. This government is currently not doing enough to reduce the harms caused by toxic drugs.

B.C. Greens call on Premier Eby to respond to pediatric health emergency

VICTORIA, B.C.  The B.C. Green Caucus is calling on the BC NDP government to provide clear, consistent, and accurate information to parents while taking steps to reduce the burden of illness in B.C.

“We acknowledge and applaud the BC NDP government for streamlining the process for accreditation of foreign-trained doctors,” said Sonia Furstenau, MLA for Cowichan Valley and leader of the BC Greens. “This is a positive step, and a recognition of the efforts, talents, and cultural knowledge of the 1,000 foreign-trained doctors currently in B.C. who have been unable to practice.

B.C. Greens applaud autism funding

VICTORIA, B.C. – The B.C. Green Caucus has issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement on autism funding for children and youth with support needs in British Columbia:

“We applaud the Premier and Minister for finally listening to parents and experts, and making the decision to not take the supports away from children and families,” said Sonia Furstenau, leader of the BC Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley. “This is a long overdue reversal of a decision that should never have been made in the first place.”

BC NDP failed to build back better

VICTORIA, B.C. – In response to today’s fiscal update Sonia Furstenau, leader of the BC Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley has issued the following statement:

“This update shows us that the BC NDP government has had the means to meet the needs of British Columbians, but they have been failing on all fronts. For those who are struggling to pay their bills, cover the cost of groceries, find affordable housing, and access reliable healthcare, this budget surplus is an indication that the BC NDP government could have been doing more.
