B.C. Greens applaud autism funding

November 25, 2022

VICTORIA, B.C. – The B.C. Green Caucus has issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement on autism funding for children and youth with support needs in British Columbia:

“We applaud the Premier and Minister for finally listening to parents and experts, and making the decision to not take the supports away from children and families,” said Sonia Furstenau, leader of the BC Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley. “This is a long overdue reversal of a decision that should never have been made in the first place.”

“As I pointed out in the Legislature this week, breaking bonds and relationships with the people providing personalized care to autistic children is an unacceptable and avoidable harm,” said Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands. “This announcement is an indication that Premier Eby is willing to listen to families, and for that he needs to be applauded.”

“The next step is to rapidly increase access to evaluation and diagnosis of children, some of whom have been forced to wait for years,” said Furstenau.
