[MEDIA RELEASE] B.C. Green Party deeply concerned for provincial economy
VICTORIA, B.C. –Today’s Throne Speech by the B.C. government reiterated a reckless and narrow view of our province’s potential for economic growth and leadership. It expressed a vision for growth exclusively tied to one industry, liquefied natural gas (“LNG”), and a definition of decline related to all other industries. The B.C. Green Party expresses serious concerns over the notion of basing our future prosperity on a single industry, let alone one that is unproven in our province.
Greens make gains in Canada and worldwide
In recent elections here in Canada and around the world, Green parties have either held their ground or made significant gains.
In Sweden, Greens retained all of seats and have formed a coalition govern with the Social Democrats. Sweden now has its very first Green cabinet ministers, with Greens heading up the ministries of the Environment and Education, as well as controlling Sweden's overseas aid agency Sida and the consumer affairs ministry. After many years sitting in the audience at UBCM as a Councillor from the District of Central Saanich, I am both honoured and humbled to be standing on this stage presenting to you today as the Leader of the BC Green Party.
As I only have five minutes of your time and want to be respectful of this opportunity and your time for lunch, I just want to say that I echo the greetings and the sentiments of my colleague John Horgan in thanking the executive, staff and members of the UBCM.

The B.C. Green Party congratulates the Green Party of New Brunswick and Leader David Coon, who was elected this evening in the provincial riding of Fredericton South. Coon is the first Green politician elected east of B.C..
Thousands march in communities around the world for climate change
The B.C. Green Party stands united with the hundreds of thousands of people around the world taking part in the People’s Climate March and associated events. Over 2,800 events in more than 166 countries are estimated to have taken place today, drawing attention to the impact of climate change on world’s economy, environment and communities.
