Happy Thanksgiving
Today is the day we pause to give thanks.
First, I’m thankful that in 1957, the Canadian government set aside the second Monday of October to acknowledge the “bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”
BC Green Party celebrates World Mental Health Day
The BC Green Party joins the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in celebrating World Mental Health Day. 2013 is dedicated to highlighting Mental Health and Older People.
The WFMH and WHO are working to highlight the tremendous challenges of global mental health. In British Columbia mental health issues continue to challenge our communities.
An Open Letter to Premier Christy Clark

Dear Premier Clark:
I applaud the fact that your government has been consistent in requiring five conditions to be met before you will support enhanced heavy oil tanker traffic off our coast. Consistency is important in providing certainty to the public, business and investors alike. It is for this reason that I am writing to you to seek some further clarification on the second and third of your five conditions. As written, these conditions require:
“World-leading marine oil-spill response, prevention and recovery systems for B.C.’s coastline and ocean to manage and mitigate the risks and costs of heavy-oil pipelines and shipments.”
“World-leading practices for land oil spill prevention, response and recovery systems to manage and mitigate the risks and costs of heavy oil pipelines.”

The Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services (SCFGS) clarified Wednesday that it is the first of many opportunities for the public to provide input on the Core Review currently being undertaken by the British Columbia government.
Children & Families Committee
On September 23, 2013 Mary Ellen Turpel-Lalond presented two reports to the Select Standing Committee for Children and Youth:
- Trauma, Turmoil and Tragedy: Understanding the Needs of Children and Youth at Risk of Suicide and Self-Harm, An Aggregate Review (November 2012);
- Who Protected Him? How B.C.'s Child Welfare System Failed One of Its Most Vulnerable Children (February 2013).
Her reports highlighted the shameful status of children in care in British Columbia. Her update on the state of the system was shocking. The full transcript is available on Hansard.
