Jonina Campbell appointed B.C. Green Party Education Critic

November 03, 2016

NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – Jonina Campbell, B.C. Green Party candidate for New Westminster, has been named the party’s Education Critic by leader Andrew Weaver. Campbell will be responsible for bringing forward critical perspectives on the B.C. Liberal government’s education policies, as well as supporting the party’s platform development in education.

“Under a BC Liberal government we have witnessed a decline in supports and services for our students, in particular, those who need them most”, Campbell said. “I will continue to speak out regarding the needs of all of our students, especially those who are most vulnerable.

“School districts need sustainable, stable and predictable funding. The government, through the Ministry of Education, must work with each of our partner groups to solve the myriad of issues that educators, parents, trustees, and students face on a daily basis. Our children deserve better.”

“It is an honour to appoint Jonina Campbell as Education Critic”, Weaver added. “She is immensely qualified for this role. She is a former classroom teacher with the responsibility of supporting our special-needs students; she has served as a trustee for five years and held the position of board Chair for three years. She knows the frustration of trying to balance a budget that is woefully insufficient, while at the same time teaching our most vulnerable and at-risk students with a lack of necessary resources.”

Campbell was first elected to the New Westminster school board in 2011 and served as school board chair from 2013 until last month. As chair, Campbell led the school district toward financial stability and secured funding for the long-awaited New Westminster Secondary School.
