Furstenau: NDP’s blind pursuit of Site C putting hydro rates at risk

October 21, 2020

SHAWNIGAN LAKE B.C. – Sonia Furstenau responded to a new report that shows that the ongoing geotechnical issues and cost overruns were flagged as early as May 2019. The project is currently under review and it is uncertain whether the geotechnical issues can be resolved.

“It is deeply troubling that the B.C. NDP appear to have continued to pursue Site C despite so many red flags, and before telling the public about these issues,” said Furstenau.

“The risk of Site C to our provincial finances cannot be understated. We are exposing ourselves to incredible risks at a time when the government can least afford it. There is no bigger risk to increasing hydro rates than the NDP’s blind pursuit of this increasingly costly project.

“I’m committed to ensuring B.C. does not continue down this misguided path, no matter what shape the next government takes.”

Furstenau questioned John Horgan on the issue of Site C’s escalating costs during the CKNW radio debate. In his response, Horgan opened the door to cancelling the project for the first time since the B.C. NDP approved the project in 2017.
