VICTORIA, B.C. – Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands has issued the following statement in response to housingregulations and modeling released today by the province:
"The regulations and modeling show that the government had answers to my important questions during the debate with the Minister. Instead of a thorough discussion on significant housing reform, the Minister chose to delay, dismiss, deny, and mislead.
“Minister Kahlon and Premier Eby should be ashamed of themselves for allowing a factless debate on housing legislation by withholding details, blocking answers to informed and important questions. Now, with the bill passed, it's too late to have these discussions on the record.
“I explicitly asked the minister about the potential increase in the value of detached single-family homes. The minister argued this would not happen, yet now the modeling indicates what we worried about.
“Releasing these documents with no briefing, no press conference, no accountability confirms for me the BC NDP are hiding critical information and accountability. How else can one read into this approach?
“The changes are significant and will impact communities for decades. The Legislative Assembly, local officials, media, and the public deserved access to this data last week, while the government could be held accountable.
“This was a deliberate and autocratic approach that shows a clear disdain for democracy. It’s infuriating, the government should be transparent. Rest assured, this is not the last you will hear from me on this matter.”
