B.C. Greens introduce bill to remove gendered language

March 07, 2024

VICTORIA, B.C. - Today, Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands introduced theNorth Island-Coast Development Initiative Trust Amendment Act, 2024 to rectify outdated and gendered language within legislation; an important step towards ensuring inclusivity and equality within our legal framework.

"We're making a simple but important change to reflect today's language. This shows our commitment to inclusivity and respect for everyone,” said Olsen.

“The Island-Coastal Economic Trust requested that the province remove all gendered language from legislation. Last fall I drafted an amendment and the province recognized its worth and it passed. Our caucus continued with this work. This PMB offers the Minister an opportunity to make a change. I hope this bill is debated and passed.

"This isn't just about words, it's about creating systems that respect everyone. This bill shows that we're listening to the needs of all members of society. Small adjustments can make a big difference in promoting equality."

Background:

  • The bill seeks to remove gendered language from sections of the North Island-Coast Development Initiative Trust Act of 2005.
  • The bill aims to replace gendered pronouns like "he or she" with gender-neutral language such as "the individual" or "the director" throughout different sections of the existing legislation.
