B.C. Greens statement on Hanukkah

November 30, 2018

VICTORIA, B.C. – Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Greens, issued the following statement in recognition of the first night of Hanukkah:

“At sundown this coming Sunday, Jewish communities across British Columbia and around the world will mark the beginning of Hanukkah. On behalf of my colleagues I would like to offer our warmest wishes to all those celebrating over the coming eight days.

“Hanukkah is held each year in commemoration of a miracle. Thousands of years ago, the Maccabees only had enough oil to light their menorah for one day. The oil kept burning for eight nights.

“In celebrating light, peace, and the overcoming of adversity, this ancient holiday is more timely than ever this year. As friends and families gather across the province to celebrate over the next week we hold you in our hearts and hope that the season is a time of love and warmth.

“Chag Hanukkah Sameach.”
