VICTORIA, B.C. - Today, the BC NDP issued a call for power for British Columbia to provide clean, affordable electricity to support B.C.'s demand for electricity. Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley has issued the following statement:
“Clean energy is the future, this power will help us decarbonize and meet our climate goals. However, government should ensure that clean energy is going first and foremost to British Columbians, and that we’re not prioritizing LNG.
“Climate change is here - wildfires, heat waves, flooding, and droughts hit our province year after year. With record low snowpack levels, concerns about drought and the ability to generate hydropower are heightened. It’s clear we need to act fast to diversify our electricity system and stay competitive in the clean energy economy. This call is a critical first step, and I am happy to see this government take it.
“I commend the move towards First Nations co-ownership in energy projects, a significant and overdue step. Clean energy development provides jobs and economic opportunities to rural communities and First Nations.”
