Statement from Andrew Weaver on Vancouver City Hall rally and counter-protests today

August 19, 2017

VICTORIA, BC - Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green caucus, issued the following statement in regards to the white nationalist/anti-immigrant rally and counter protest scheduled at Vancouver City Hall today.

“I extend my sincere gratitude to the citizens of Vancouver who are peacefully standing up to racism and hate today,” said Weaver. “You represent the best qualities of our society and British Columbia is made better by your laudable commitment to your principles.

“While British Columbians are fortunate to live in a vibrant democracy, we must recognize that there remains work to be done when it comes to equality and respect for diversity. We must also acknowledge that our own history is not unblemished when it comes to racism. Injustices like the head tax, residential schools and other forms of systemic discrimination against Indigenous people and people of colour resonate through generations, and must be proactively and honestly addressed so we can move forward on the path towards equality together.”
