Dr. Michael Markwick Statement on Pink Shirt Day

February 22, 2017

NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. - Michael Markwick, the B.C. Green Party Candidate for for West Vancouver-Capilano today released the following statement on Pink Shirt Day:

“Pink shirt day serves as an important reminder that everyone in British Columbia is equal in human dignity.

It is also a reminder that all of us have an important part to play, not one day but everyday, in making sure all of us are free to be true to ourselves and contribute to making British Columbia an example to the world of inclusion and respect.  The rise of intolerance, as recent global events and the shootings in Quebec City show us, is a real and present danger to the values we hold as a free and democratic people.

This is why it is urgent to focus on the concrete things we can do to show our respect for human dignity.  Since 2002, British Columbians have been without the protection of a human rights commission — a generation of LGBTQ+ British Columbians, and members of our community of every background, have suffered as an important voice of for human rights was silenced.  The BC Green Party is committed to seeing the restoration of the BC Human Rights Commission as an impartial champion of human rights law.  This is essential if we’re to see British Columbia truly cherish the diversity and dignity of everyone in our beautiful province.”
