VICTORIA B.C. – The B.C. Green Party today welcomes the introduction of a federal bill to classify conversion therapy as a criminal act in Canada.
“It is so great to see that calls for a ban on conversion therapy have led to this progress” said MLA Adam Olsen, interim leader of the B.C. Green Party. “Survivors have bravely spoken out about this form of abuse and human rights violation for years, calling for government to respond with clear action. I am proud of our work as B.C. Greens to amplify their voices and to introduce legislation to ban conversion therapy in B.C.. Today’s actions by the federal government move our country forward in making our communities safe for all members.”
The B.C. Green Party introduced a Private Member’s Bill to ban conversion therapy in the province during the spring 2019 session. The B.C. NDP government chose not to advance the legislation. “Though long overdue, we are delighted to now see leadership from the federal government,” said Olsen. “Every person has the freedom to be who they are, and the right to live in health and safety; so-called conversion ‘therapy’ is a mentally and sometimes physically dangerous practice that has no place in our society.”
