With a federal ‘Yes’, it’s time for the provincial government to say ‘No’

Victoria B.C. - The B.C. Green Party is calling the Federal Cabinet decision that approved Enbridge’s controversial Northern Gateway pipeline deeply troubling for democracy. The majority of British Columbians have consistently been opposed to the pipeline, as was reiterated with the latest Nanos poll, showing 67% opposition.

“The Federal Government continues to ignore the will of British Columbians,” says Andrew Weaver, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head and Deputy Leader of the B.C. Green Party. “The fact is, Kitimat is opposed to this project. First Nations are opposed to it. British Columbians are opposed to it. It’s time for the Provincial Government to draw a line in the sand, and reject the Northern Gateway project.”

With the failure of the Federal Government to represent the will of British Columbians, the spotlight is now on Premier Clark.

“The Federal Government is steamrolling this pipeline through the backyards of British Columbians.” says B.C. Green Party leader Adam Olsen. “Premier Clark can stop this pipeline. I am calling on her to do that today.”

Yesterday, Premier Clark reiterated that any heavy oil pipeline needs to meet her government’s five conditions, concluding that “Enbridge hasn’t met them yet.”

One of those conditions is a world-leading marine spill response regime. This is complicated by the fact that the tankers would be carrying diluted bitumen, a heavy oil that has been shown to sink when spilled in the ocean, making recovery more difficult.

The B.C. Green Party is the only party with a clear stance calling for a moratorium on tankers transporting this heavy oil, adding this as a sixth condition on top of B.C. Liberal’s existing five conditions.

The BC government has stated that they have the power to stop the Enbridge pipeline through the 60 required provincial government permits. Yet so far the government has largely sat on the sidelines, neglecting to make any concrete commitments one way or the other.

“This is no time for political dances and electoral calculations. This is our coast they are putting at risk. British Columbians expect Northern Gateway to be rejected by their provincial government, and we expect it today,” added Adam Olsen.

The queen is not about to do anything Patti. Again you are looking at power with the greatest influence being money. Do you really think she cares about us? Sorry, but her concern is around her own family and wealth. She was not happy when she had to pay taxes, at least once. Lol

Speaking of Queens. Perhaps it’s time to get Queen Elizabeth to act on behalf of British Columbians by invoking her right as sovereign head to stop this act. All Crown lands are actually under the directorship of Queen Elizabeth. Perhaps she can defend us against Big Oil, since no else in power other than the Green Party and the NDP seem willing to – under the thumbs of corporate oil as they are. Shame on the Liberals and the Conservative Government for putting us all in this unbelievable position. Why do you think B.C. is as beautiful as it is? It’s because we have NEVER caved to corporations and kept our land as pure and clean as possible. Now our own Government has put us up for sale to the highest bidder. The Liberal Government, if any of you were ignorant enough to vote for them – is THE WORST Government this province has ever known. They are corrupt, and should ALL be impeached for the damage they are doing daily to the province of B.C. The same goes for the Conservative Government and their leader, Prime Minister Harper. It is clear they are all under corporate influence, and should be impeached.

The 1% does not own this province, neither are we Queen Christy’s kingdom. British Columbians must now do to the pipeline decision just as we did with the HST. We must speak loudly, firmly and clearly in majority numbers, and ABOLISH this insane decision before it completely poisons beautiful British Columbia for no other reason – than corporate profiteering. Listen to this Queen Clark. You work for us – it is not the other way around. We OWN B.C. You DO NOT.

What is there about ‘NO’ from the BC public that you do not understand? And while Christy Clark waffles back and forth, hiding behind her 5 conditions rather than speak out about the federal steamrolling, the province appears to be up for grabs by the loudest blustering political/corporate entity in the picture. Shame be on all levels of government who kiss the hems of the fossil-fuel profiteers!!!!!!
