Weaver statement on B.C. Liberal fundraising bill

June 26, 2017

VICTORIA, B.C. - Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green Caucus, issued the following statement regarding the Liberal electoral finance bill:

“The Premier has stated that she wishes to test the confidence of the House, and that should be her first priority in this sitting,” said Weaver.

“In light of our existing accord, until confidence has been tested, it would not be appropriate for us to consider debate on government bills. We will be pleased to work with both parties on legislation to ban big money after the confidence of the House is tested.

“For sixteen years, the Liberals have had the opportunity to reform our outrageously lax campaign finance laws, which have been subject to international scrutiny. For sixteen years they have failed to act while continuing to accept millions in corporate donations.

“The B.C. Greens banned corporate and union donations to our party in September 2016 because these donations have the greatest undue influence on our political system. There are a number of other crucial reforms required to clean up B.C. politics. We look forward to ensuring the best idea from all sides of the house are incorporated into the eventual legislation.”
