Weaver and Stupka statements on start of Kelowna West by-election

January 17, 2018

VICTORIA B.C. – B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver and candidate Robert Stupka released the following statements after Premier Horgan requested the writ be issued for the Kelowna West by-election.

“This by-election presents Kelowna West with a choice between forward-thinking change or more of the same”, Stupka said. “While opposition MLAs can serve a vital role in the legislature, the Okanagan is currently represented by nine B.C. Liberal MLAs – who are not in government and refuse to accept any productive role in the legislature, simply for cynical, political reasons. The Okanagan needs a new voice in Victoria.

“While also an opposition party, the B.C. Green Party has an influential role in the development of government policies and legislation. As a result, the government has adopted many of their strong, fiscally prudent policies. At the same time, the B.C. Greens have been highly critical of short-sighted economic decisions, such as the removal of Metro Vancouver bridge tolls and the continuation of Site C, which both the other parties support.

“Kelowna West needs a representative who puts their community first and honours the indisputable role of evidence in decision-making. We are ready for change and I am honoured to offer this hopeful vision as the B.C. Green candidate for this by-election.”

“While the B.C. Greens have already been campaigning for weeks, I am glad that the writ has finally dropped” Weaver added. “The voters of Kelowna West need a representative in Victoria and this by-election has been delayed for too long.

“I spent the better part of a week in the riding with Robert earlier this month, connecting with business and community leaders and campaigning. One thing is clear from my visit: the voters of Kelowna West are yearning for a viable option to take on the B.C. Liberal status quo. Robert is a credible and influential voice that answers that call for change. I am confident that he will inspire voters in the riding to seize the opportunity before them on Feb. 14.”
