Green spokesperson for salmon. “In our submission to budget 2019, our caucus advocated for substantial funding for the Pacific Salmon Foundation to support their community wild salmon restoration and conservation projects. We’re glad to see that today that government is actioning our recommendations.”

Olsen publicly released his Standing up for Wild Salmon report on May 16th after months of consultation and legislative work. The report outlined the challenges facing B.C.’s wild salmon populations and highlighted a proposed path forward, calling for the creation of a Wild Salmon Commissioner and a Wild SalmonSecretariat.

VICTORIA, B.C. – Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, publicly released his Standing up for Wild Salmon report today outside the B.C. legislature. The report outlines the challenges facing B.C.’s wild salmon populations and highlights a proposed path forward, through the creation of a Wild Salmon Commissioner and supporting Wild Salmon Secretariat.
After making the initial pitch to the Premier in March, Olsen hosted representatives from a diverse range of fisheries backgrounds for a consultation forum where there was unanimous consensus on the need for a Wild Salmon Secretariat or Commissioner in B.C. Following his forum, Olsen presented their feedback to government along with a detailed proposal. Today’s public report is an extension of that work.

Green Party MLA for Saanich North and the Islands and spokesperson for fisheries will convene a group of representatives from First Nations, wildlife and fish organizations, policy and advocacy groups, habitat conservation groups, the commercial fishery, and the fisheries tourism sector for a forum on wild salmon in Vancouver tomorrow.
DETAILS: Olsen is hosting the forum to seek input on the potential mandate and structure of a proposed Wild Salmon Secretariat/Commissioner. On March 1, 2018 Olsen called for the B.C. NDP government to create a secretariat or commissioner due to the fact that responsibility for fisheries in B.C. is currently fractured, leaving wild salmon and steelhead vulnerable and in decline.
