“We stand against hate and racism. As a political party in a country founded upon colonialism, we acknowledge the part we play in the perpetuation of systemic racism in BC. It’s our responsibility to fight for justice, equity and representation in our party and politics.”

“World AIDS Day continues to serve as an international reminder of the horrendous plight of HIV/AIDS in the modern world. We must pay it heed, particularly because the disease’s significance and impact seems to increasingly fade from the forefront of many people’s minds.

VICTORIA, B.C. - Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green Party, today introduces a Private Member’s Bill to establish a permanent day of remembrance for Holodomor in British Columbia. The Bill, The Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (“Holodomor”) Memorial Day Act, 2017, would establish the fourth Saturday in November as an official day of remembrance. During Holodomor, 4-10 million Ukrainians were killed as a result of a man-made famine in 1932-33. One-third of those killed were children. An earlier version of the bill was twice introduced by NDP MLA Bruce Ralston.

“It is time this important day of remembrance was recognized by B.C.’s legislature,” said Weaver.

VICTORIA B.C. – Sonia Furstenau, MLA for Cowichan Valley and B.C. Green Party spokesperson for health and wellbeing, issued the following statement on the Transgender Day of Remembrance:

“In British Columbia and Canada, we have made significant steps forward in protecting the rights of transgender people. Gender identity and expression are finally included in the B.C. Human Rights Code. Four openly transgender candidates from the three major political parties ran in the May election. The first known transgender Canadian mayor was just elected in Quebec. But sadly, these achievements have come all too slowly for those who have experienced discrimination, transphobia, and violence.

VICTORIA, B.C. - Sonia Furstenau, Deputy Leader of the B.C. Green Party, rose in the B.C. Legislature today to make a statement about #MeToo. The #MeToo campaign has emerged as women across the world have flooded social media with personal stories of sexual assault. Furstenau’s statement was met with a standing ovation showing support from members on both sides of the house.

“I rise today, Honourable Speaker to say, Me Too,” said Furstenau.
