Statement on new shelter spaces in Victoria

August 22, 2024

Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) Territory / Victoria, B.C. — Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the BC Greens, has issued the following statement:

“Yesterday’s announcement of 72 shelter spaces in Victoria shows how the BC NDP have failed the homeless and at-risk with big promises and minimal action. Community groups are doing the heavy lifting, while the BC NDP offers the bare minimum. With 1,600 people unhoused, their response is 72 spaces just before an election. Where was the urgency?
“Under the BC NDP, homelessness in Victoria has risen by 20%. We need real solutions for housing, mental health, and social services, not more hollow promises. The BC Greens will do what the BC NDP won’t, take a long-term approach and address the root causes head-on.”
