Site C Dam: We have better options

The evidence shows us that Site C Dam is not our best option for energy in British Columbia. Our Government needs to develop a strategy to harness our abundant and cost-effective renewable resources that create more jobs with less impact.

We need your help!  Despite having multiple viable energy alternatives the BC Liberal government is determined to push forward construction on Site C Dam.

Yesterday in the Legislature, Andrew Weaver argued against it. "Site C is fiscally foolish, socially irresponsible and environmentally unsound. It no longer represents a wise economic social environmental option for providing British Columbians with the power they need. There are other alternatives available at cheaper costs with lower environmental and social impacts. "

We believe there are better options for BC. There are numerous opportunities for BC to grow its renewable resources to deliver the same power at a reduced financial, social and environmental cost, with the ability to generate more permanent jobs spread throughout the province.

"I’ve been pointing out for several years now that Site C is the wrong project at the wrong time when alternative energy, including geothermal, wind, tidal and small-scale hydro sources, coupled with existing dams would provide substantially improved firm energy and capacity. This approach would be less damaging to the environment and distributed around British Columbia. It would provide future power requirements with better costs and employment opportunities. Geothermal, wind, tidal and smaller hydro projects would deal substantial economic benefit to communities, especially First Nations."

To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:

The petition of the undersigned, residents of the Province of British Columbia, states that:

Whereas the construction of the Site C dam will flood 6,427 acres of Class 1 & 2 agricultural land (a total of 15,985 acres of Class 1-7 agricultural land);

and Whereas under this plan, the cost has already grown to $8.8 Billion with the burden, along with further cost increases, placed squarely on the taxpayer’s shoulders;

and Whereas there are numerous opportunities for BC to grow its renewable resources to deliver the same power at a reduced financial, social and environmental cost, with the ability to generate more permanent jobs spread throughout the province;

Your petitioners respectfully request that the BC Liberals halt the construction of Site C Dam, and instead develop a strategy to harness our abundant and cost-effective renewable resources.
