Passing of the Haida Nation Recognition Amendment Act a pivotal moment

May 21, 2024

VICTORIA, B.C. - Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands and member of Tsartlip First Nation congratulates the Haida Nation on the passage of legislation recognizing Haida Title.

“The passing of this Act marks a profound and historic victory for the Haida Nation. For decades, the Haida Nation has been fighting for their rights and title to Haida Gwaii. They have occupied, honoured, and stewarded the lands and waters of the archipelago since time immemorial and, finally, Haida Title is recognized.

“This landmark agreement stands as a testament to the resilience and unwavering spirit of the Haida people, who have tirelessly advocated for the recognition of their rights and the protection of their lands. Their determination and dedication have inspired communities around the world.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we acknowledge the path of struggle that led here and the promise of a more just and respectful future. Haida principles like yaghuudang – respect for all living things – are a reminder that we can carve a new relationship with the lands and waters we depend on.

“Finally, the executive and legislative branches of the British Columbia government have heeded the advice of the judicial branch to breathe life into this agreement, the first of its kind, revealing a new path to reconciliation, from rights and title denial to recognition through agreement not litigation.

“I am deeply honored to have been a part of this process and extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Haida Nation for inspiring and leading the way towards meaningful reconciliation and self-determination.”
