Not good enough

Read Standing up for Wild Salmon

BC’s wild salmon are in crisis. Only bold and decisive action will revive the province's stocks.

We have had some success keeping this issue at the top of government's agenda. Last year, Saanich North and the Islands MLA Adam Olsen brought together stakeholders, NGOs and tourists groups, and from there the Standing up for Wild Salmon report was born.

The report also led to the creation of a Wild Salmon Secretariat and a Wild Salmon Advisory Council, which Adam is a member of. In March 2019, the Wild Salmon Advisory Council released its final report, which included 13 recommendations to the provincial government.

Most recently, the provincial and federal governments launched the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund, which will support fisheries innovation, science and infrastructure.

But the government's slow movement on removing fish farms out of migratory routes is still unacceptable.

Fish farms are a major threat facing wild salmon, but they are also at risk due to overfishing, climate change, and habitat loss. As we continue to push government to keep its promise to get fish farms out of migratory routes, we will proactively work to take action in these other areas so that we can help support this iconic BC species.
