To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:

The petition of the undersigned states that:

Whereas the accidental release of tailings pond effluent into the surrounding environment can seriously harm (1) human health through exposure to drinking water and food sources, (2) the environmental health of our ecosystems and (3) the economic health of B.C.;

and Whereas the B.C. government has the responsibility to ensure that the people of B.C. have confidence in the mining sector and in the provincial government’s ability to enforce its mining regulations;

and Whereas the B.C. government has the responsibility to ensure that tailings ponds are not at risk of failure, being empowered through Section 18 of the B.C. Mines Act to order a mine operator to provide an independent study prepared by an engineer respecting the health and safety of its “equipment, buildings workings or structures…”;

Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House compel the B.C. government to immediately establish a fully independent process to investigate the Mount Polley mine disaster;

and your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House compel the B.C. government to require every mine in the province to undertake an immediate, fully independent engineering report of their tailings storage facilities.
