Michael Barkusky has training and considerable experience as an economist, professional accountant and financial executive. He holds a BA (Honours) degree with a major in economics, minor in political science and electives in legal subjects, earned in 1977; an MBA in which he focused on accounting, IT and financial management, earned in 1982, and the CPA, CGA professional accounting designation, having earned the now legacy designation of CGA in 1985.
He has worked in the manufacturing, retailing, international trade and professional services areas, as well as in conservation economics and First Nations economic development. More specifically, he has been involved in both client service delivery and in finance and administration, and has experience in the private sector, the government sector and the voluntary non-profit sector. He has worked extensively as a volunteer in the non-profit sector, primarily at board level, but has also done remunerated work as an economist and as a Director of Finance and Administration for larger, non-profit organizations.
He has operated his own public accounting and consulting practice for over 23 years, providing accounting services, advice and assistance with income tax, GST and PST; and consulting services in general and financial management, to a variety of clients. He has also served as treasurer for the BC Mountaineering Club for 2 years, as Secretary-Treasurer for the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics for 9 years, and as Treasurer for the BC chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) for over 5 years.
His current commitments also include serving as a Director, as the Treasurer and as the economics spokesperson, for the Board of Change, a progressive business group based in Vancouver.
