“Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, a day to remember and honour thousands of lives that have been lost or impacted by drug overdoses.
Andrew Weaver statement on Labour Day

Weaver: Federal Court Ruling show politics put ahead of evidence and reconciliation in federal approval of pipeline
VICTORIA, B.C. – Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green Party, congratulated the First Nations and local governments on the Federal Court of Appeal’s ruling today that federal government made its decision without considering all evidence and failing in their legal duty to consult First Nations. Weaver, who was an intervener in the National Energy Board hearings, says the ruling is further proof that the project should have never been approved.
“Today’s ruling is a victory for First Nations’ rights and for all those who have long held that this project was not approved based on evidence,” said Weaver.
Furstenau: Government needs to put funding behind breastfeeding action plan
VICTORIA, B.C. – Sonia Furstenau, B.C. Green Party spokesperson for children and families, says the breastfeeding action plan released by government today should be backed up by more resources to support new mothers and infants. The report comes after two court rulings found that the Ministry of Children and Family Development needed to do more to increase a mother’s access to her infant for breastfeeding and bonding and to consider the supports that were available in the mother's First Nations community to keep the family together.
“Today’s action plan is a step forward, however much more is needed, including funding for programs that will keep mothers and infants together,” said Furstenau.
MLA Furstenau: Funding for Huu-ay-aht Social Services Project big step in right direction in turning tide on child apprehension
VICTORIA, B.C. – Sonia Furstenau, B.C. Green Party spokesperson for children and family development, welcomed the news that the federal government is providing funding for the Huu-ay-aht Social Services Project. The funding will support vital community services like pregnancy support and parenting education, hiring family and protection support workers, and developing opportunities for youth engagement and awareness.
“I am very hopeful that this funding will help keep more families together,” said Furstenau.
