Matt Toner bio

Matt Toner is a serial entrepreneur, innovative digital media producer, playwright, university lecturer, and force in Vancouver’s tech media landscape.

In 2010, he was cited as one of the local industry’s top movers-and-shakers; in 2014 his studio received the City of Vancouver’s Award for Excellence in Business Innovation.  During the British Columbia election of 2013, he was an outspoken advocate for the province’s creative economy, and still regularly advises public sector stakeholders on the need to integrate innovation into economic development strategies.

Prior to his career in digital media, Matt served as an economist at the Bank of Canada and as Vice Consul for trade at the Canadian Consulate General in Manhattan. He holds a graduate degree in economics and earned the Queen’s Commission as a reserve officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, where he was first exposed to the beauty of British Columbia's coast.

In 2015, Matt crossed over to the BC Green party and became their spokesperson on Finance and the New Economy: in 2016, Andrew Weaver appointed him as one of two Deputy Leaders.  In 2017, Matt will be working closely with Vancouver-area candidates to force a breakthrough in this pivotal provincial election.
