Kamloops candidate Dan Hines named B.C. Green forestry critic

October 25, 2016

VICTORIA B.C. – B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver has named Dan Hines as the party’s forestry critic. Hines is the B.C. Green Party candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson. As forestry critic, he will be responsible for critical perspectives on the B.C. Liberal government’s management of the forestry sector within the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources. Hines will also facilitate public engagement on forestry for the party’s 2017 election platform.

“There are evident failures with the B.C. Liberals approach to the forest sector in B.C.,” says Hines. “It doesn't have to be this way. We are witnessing the ongoing practice of exporting raw logs and a lack of value-added employment, more mill closures, the destruction of old growth forests, the over-harvesting of the mountain pine beetle-affected areas of the Interior, and now the economic costs of the looming punitive softwood lumber trade battle with the U.S.. In this unfolding story, we are facing years of costly litigation with the U.S. and likely even more mill closures and job losses. It is clear that we need new leadership in BC and a new approach to our forests that includes constructive collaboration and partnership with First Nations and local communities.”

“I am very excited to appoint Dan Hines as the forestry critic for the B.C. Green Party,” Weaver added. “Dan is a strong addition to our policy team and offers a valuable voice from the B.C. Interior.”
