Furstenau: Horgan refuses to listen to the experts and cancel Site C

October 15, 2020

VICTORIA B.C. – This morning at the CKNW Leaders’ debate, B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan refused to commit to cancelling Site C if the experts say the project should be cancelled. BC Green Leader Sonia Furstenau asked Horgan this question in light of new expert reports released this week.

“I am disappointed John Horgan is continuing to ignore the evidence and refusing to provide British Columbians with a clear answer about his party's plan in regards to Site C,” said Sonia Furstenau

“In 2017, he agreed to listen to the advice of the B.C. Utility Commission if this project should proceed. When their report came back with overwhelming evidence that this project should not proceed, John Horgan and the NDP chose to ignore it and went all-in on Site C.

“Now, in light of new overwhelming evidence that this project should be at the very least delayed until it can be reviewed appropriately, John Horgan is refusing to take any action.

Earlier this week, energy economist Robert McCollough said that immediately cancelling Site C will save B.C. Hydro ratepayers $116 million per year. A report from the C.D. Howe Institute highlighted the operational and geotechnical problems that are plaguing the project.

“This is a troubling pattern we see of the B.C. NDP saying they will listen to experts during elections but refusing to do so when they are in the legislature. To me, it is very clear that the job of elected officials is to listen to experts and make decisions that are in the best interest of all British Columbians, not just your political party.

“I am calling on John Horgan to give British Columbians a clear answer. Will you commit to cancelling the Site C project if the experts tell us this project should not go ahead? Yes or no?”
