Furstenau: B.C. Greens will hold NDP to account on key issues

October 23, 2020

DUNCAN B.C. – B.C. Greens Leader Sonia Furstenau made her final pitch to voters today, highlighting how only the B.C. Greens will be able to hold the NDP to account on key issues like inequality, climate change, old growth forests and the Site C dam.

“It’s looking more and more likely that the NDP is poised to form government,” said Furstenau.

“When we look at the issues on the horizon - the escalating costs and uncertainty around the Site C dam, growing inequality and cost of living and the climate crisis - only the B.C. Greens can hold them to account. A diminished B.C. Liberal opposition has no credibility on these files. The NDP has shown before that they are willing to say the right thing to get elected, but then fail to follow through with actions once in office. We need a strong Green presence in the Legislature to make sure the NDP feels the pressure to move on these issues.

“The B.C. Greens have put forth a range of plans that will get us through the pandemic and build a stronger, more sustainable province on the other side.  We’ve highlighted gaps in the NDP’s funding for public schools, and in their support for small business and the tourism sector. We’ve proposed stronger mental health supports and programs that will help people with their rent and build a stronger social safety net. We’ve been the only ones talking about how irresponsible it is to continue subsidizing fossil fuels and fracking while we are in the midst of a climate crisis. In this campaign alone, we’ve already secured stronger commitments from the NDP to protect old-growth and to open the door to cancelling Site C.

“As voters go to the polls, I encourage them to consider how we can best continue to move forward together. They have an opportunity in this election to look at the representatives in their riding, see who best represents their values and will most faithfully represent their community.”
