Expansion of LNG shows BC NDP priorities

January 17, 2023

VICTORIA, B.C. – Sonia Furstenau, leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley, has issued the following statement in response to LNG Canada considering the use of natural-gas powered turbines in Phase 2 in Kitimat, B.C.

“LNG Canada is a carbon bomb. LNG is the single biggest source of emissions in Canada’s history. Phase 2 emissions would be the equivalent to 1.7 million new cars on the road each year.

“We are in a climate emergency. We cannot afford to expand fossil fuel infrastructure and miss key emissions targets. LNG Phase 1 already made it practically impossible to meet our CleanBC goals. LNG Phase 2 makes it a pipedream - electrified or not.

“We shouldn't be talking about electrifying expanded fossil fuel projects; we should be focusing on electrifying existing industries to lower our emissions.

“Every single BC NDP MLA, supported by every single BC Liberal MLA, voted in favour of subsidizing LNG Canada, owned by Shell, Petronas, Petrochina, Mitsibushi and Kogas. These companies combined, made over $40 billion dollars in profits in 2022 alone.

“Coastal GasLink, the pipeline which will provide natural gas to LNG Canada, has damaged waterways and the surrounding environment, and trampled Indigenous rights. The province has repeatedly prioritized Coastal GasLink’s priorities over the publics.

“The premier has an opportunity to live up to his government’s promises of climate action and accountability. LNG Canada Phase 2 guarantees that these promises will be broken.”
