In 2001, BC Green candidate Rob La Belle came second in Delta South with 16.5% of the vote, showing a strong voter base at that time. In the 2013 election, the BC Greens chose to support Independent candidate Vicki Huntington by not running a candidate in South Delta at all.
They announced they would do the same in 2017. When Vicki's health caused her to withdraw just prior to the election, Larry Colero stepped in. With no local organization and few dollars or volunteers, Larry was able to draw 9% of the vote. Imagine how a Green candidate might do in the next election if they had volunteer and financial support.
That’s why South Delta's first BC Green Party Riding Association was launched on Oct. 12, 2017 - to select and provide support for our Green candidates in future elections. Three Green MLAs elected in 2017 gives us hope that South Deltans will soon start to appreciate the value of a Green vote as strategic, as well as a vote from the heart for future generations.
