BC Greens respond to Human Rights Commissioner report

Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen)Territory / Victoria, B.C. Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the BC Greens, has issued the following statement in response to a new report from the B.C. Human Rights Commissioner, highlighting housing as the top human rights concern in B.C.

“The BC NDP’s housing policies are failing the people who need help the most. In Sidney, where the province neglected to protect deeply affordable housing, we’ve seen the devastating impact on those facing desperate housing insecurity. Redevelopment has displaced many residents who had already struggled to find interim housing, and now even that is under threat.

“Neither the province nor local governments have adequate measures in place to ensure people with core housing/extreme core needs are not displaced to nowhere. This is the product of the BC NDP’s market-driven housing program.

“It's unacceptable that B.C. remains the no-fault eviction capital of Canada. We’ve been calling for real protections for people at risk of losing their homes, including implementing vacancy control, expanding the Rental Protection Fund, protecting tenants from displacement and redevelopment, prioritizing non-market housing, and addressing the financialization of housing.

“The BC NDP continue to look the other way, allowing the situation to worsen while British Columbians are left quite literally, to pay the price.”
