BC Greens reintroduce bill to remove FOI fees

VICTORIA, B.C. - Today, Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands reintroduced legislation to strengthen freedom of information in British Columbia. The proposed amendments to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Personal Privacy Act include the elimination of the BC NDP’s $10 fee for FOI requests.

“By removing the $10 fee we are protecting democratic values and preventing the spread of misinformation. Free access to information is necessary to maintain public trust and accountability, especially during times of doubt and conspiracy theories,” said Olsen.

The fee has been widely criticized for diminishing transparency, hindering effective journalism, and restricting Indigenous people from accessing information about their own communities.

"We must empower both the public and the press by ensuring unrestricted access to information that influences public policy and directly affects our communities,” continued Olsen.
