BC Greens announce candidate for Burnaby East following nomination contest

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh [Squamish] Territory / Burnaby, B.C.– The BC Green Party is thrilled to announce that Tara Shustarian has secured the party’s nomination for the riding of Burnaby East, following a closely contested race with Agnes Tong. The nomination contest, which drew significant attention from local party members, concluded with a decisive win for Tara, who brings a wealth of experience in environmental activism and social justice advocacy to her candidacy.

“Tara Shustarian represents the very best of what it means to be a BC Green. Her dedication to the environment and her community aligns perfectly with the values our party stands for,” said party leader Sonia Furstenau. “Tara’s work on the ground, from advocating for the Climate Emergency Plan in Burnaby to her leadership in the All on Board transit campaign, makes her an outstanding candidate who will undoubtedly be a strong voice for Burnaby East in the legislature.”

Tara Shustarian is a passionate changemaker, with a diverse background in activism and community service. Her journey began during her college years, where she was actively involved in significant social and environmental movements, including the renowned "Chipko" movement. After moving to Canada in 2002, Tara continued her advocacy, particularly through her involvement in the anti-TMX movement and her strong support for Indigenous rights. Her leadership on the board of Force of Nature was instrumental in the City of Burnaby adopting a Climate Emergency Plan in 2019. Tara’s recent role as a Climate Action Fellow with the Urban Resilient Futures Initiative further solidifies her commitment to finding climate solutions that benefit her community.

Expressing her excitement about the nomination, Tara Shustarian stated, “Whether at the local or provincial level, my greatest joy and honour has been to serve and support my community. I am excited to bring my passion for justice and sustainability to the people of Burnaby East. Together, we can make a real difference.”

The BC Green Party extends its gratitude to Agnes Tong for her participation in the nomination contest and looks forward to her continued involvement with the party.
