VICTORIA, B.C. – B.C Green Party interim leader MLA Adam Olsen for Saanich-North and the Islands issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement by Minister Ralston on the Province’s plans to clean up orphan and inactive wells in British Columbia.
“While we welcome the investment of fund into a program that will address environmental liabilities and create immediate jobs, it must be noted that we should have never allowed a situation where companies were able to profit off the extraction of a public resource only to walk away from the mess they created in the process, leaving taxpayers to clean up after them.
“As we begin to rebuild our economy after this pandemic, we must learn from our mistakes and recognize that in some cases ‘business as usual’ is not what we want to return to. We can build back better, setting the direction for a more sustainable and equitable future.”
