BC Green caucus calls on MLAs to follow moral compass, vote against LNG

April 01, 2019

VICTORIA, B.C. — LNG legislation is pulling the province in two different directions in its fight against climate change. Today Bill 10, which provides tax breaks to the LNG industry, is going through Committee Stage. The BC Greens will require all MLAs to be on record with their votes for each section of the legislation.

“We are committed to opposing this legislation at every opportunity,” said MLA Andrew Weaver, leader of the BC Green caucus. “By calling division on each of these sections, we are offering every MLA an opportunity to vote with their conscience, to question their party, and to look in the mirror when they go home without shame. If MLAs feel conflicted in giving massive tax breaks to what will become the single largest point source of carbon emissions in Canada’s history right after endorsing CleanBC’s objectives to reduce BC’s emissions- and we know many are- they must vote against this legislation. They must do so for their constituencies, for their children, and for their own moral compasses. This is an exercise in parliamentary democracy, and there is no better subject for a rigorous debate than the future of our planet.”
