B.C. Greens Leader MLA Sonia Furstenau responds to Speech from the Throne

December 07, 2020

VICTORIA, B.C. - Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Green Party, MLA for Cowichan Valley responded to the government’s Speech from the Throne:

“The majority of today’s Throne Speech restates actions taken with the support of all parties while providing very few details about what British Columbians can expect as an economic recovery plan from this government,” said MLA Furstenau.

“It was only a matter of days after introducing the recovery strategy that the B.C. NDP triggered an election, delaying much-needed social and financial support in an expected second wave of COVID-19. Government now needs to deliver programs quickly to those struggling from the impacts of the pandemic. The small business supports in place are lacking and have let far too many businesses fall through the cracks. We also need to take more decisive action to support British Columbians' mental health and provide more support for teachers in their classrooms.

“We are in the depths of a second wave and British Columbians need support to navigate the immediate economic and health impacts of this crisis. But the government also needs to prepare for the future. We expect to see this government outline a far more ambitious plan for an equitable covid recovery that is built upon climate action and reconciliation.”
