VICTORIA, B.C. – The B.C. Green Caucus is raising concerns about the activities of UK Energy Company Drax and calling for the BC NDP to immediately suspend Drax’s operating licenses pending review.
“The Minister of Forests continues to dance around numbers and definitions of wood products,” said Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley. “Internationally renowned media outlets have reliable information and video footage that contradicts the Minister’s statements that whole trees from primary forests are not being used for wood pellets.
“Today we are calling on this government to review the BC-based wood pellet operations of Drax, to ensure that no whole logs from primary forests are being used in wood pellet production. We also call on the BC NDP to immediately suspend Drax’s operating licenses pending this review.
“This company, whose executive includes BC’s former Chief Forester, operates a monopoly on wood pellet operations and obtains clean energy subsidies to log and process primary forests in British Columbia, which are burned as wood pellets in the UK.”
