B.C. Greens call for improved access to reproductive healthcare services

May 18, 2022

VICTORIA, B.C. – Sonia Furstenau, leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley is calling on the BC NDP to immediately invest in improving access to abortion and other reproductive healthcare services across the province.

“The BC NDP have stated that they are pro-choice, but actions speak louder than words. The truth of the matter is that reproductive healthcare remains inaccessible in many parts of British Columbia. This exacerbates existing inequities: rural British Columbians and especially Indigenous people have to travel large distances and pay large sums of money in order to obtain abortion services.”

While the abortion pill has been made available by prescription, it does not work for everyone as it depends on how far along a pregnancy is or any complicating factors.

“This is an essential step for promoting gender equity. It is more important than ever to improve access to healthcare, especially reproductive healthcare, in this province. Earlier this year my colleague Adam Olsen and I also called on the BC NDP to immediately provide free prescription contraception across the province, fulfilling a BC NDP election promise they made two years ago. They have yet to take meaningful action towards implementing this promise, despite it being another way they could provide relief for people facing rising costs of living.”
