VICTORIA, B.C. – Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley has issued the following statement in response to the swearing in of David Eby as British Columbia's 37th premier:
"I congratulate David Eby on becoming the next premier of British Columbia. I look forward to working across party lines as our province continues to face worsening crises that require collaboration from all parties.
“British Columbians continue to deal with cost of living and lack of affordable housing. They are worried about the collapse of our healthcare system, the unrelenting deaths from the poisoned drug crisis, the climate crisis, and community safety. The new premier has made big promises, and has set the expectation of urgent action. The BC NDP government must delay no further in taking steps that will address these crises.
“No doubt people are struggling to make ends meet and any assistance for middle and low income families is welcome, but this is no indication of the fresh approach that is desperately needed when it comes to our economic and fiscal management. This is a government that is adding over $16 billion to BC Hydro's debt to build the massively destructive Site C dam, destroying agricultural land at a time where grocery prices are soaring. We can't just spend our way out of this crisis with cheques here and there, we need to make systemic changes and smarter decisions.”
