Lək̓ʷəŋən [Lekwungen] Territory / Victoria, B.C. — The B.C. Green Party is set to hold a nomination contest for the Saanich North and the Islands riding, following MLA Adam Olsen's decision not to seek re-election in the upcoming fall 2024 provincial election.
Residents will have the opportunity to choose between three candidates. Amy Haysom, a long-term resident of the Saanich North and the Islands community, brings a wealth of experience in education, small business, youth programs, and land stewardship. Stuart Mackinnon, with an extensive background in environmental advocacy and public service, aims to continue the legacy of Green leadership in the region. Rob Botterell, with his roots in the BC coast and extensive experience in law and advocacy, seeks to address key policy areas, including social and economic inequality, inadequate health care, an unsustainable economy, and pressing environmental challenges.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated and passionate candidates stepping forward to represent Saanich North and the Islands. Each of them brings unique strengths and a deep commitment to their community. I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have,” said Sonia Furstenau, leader of the B.C. Green Party.
"This riding has been a stronghold for our party, and we are committed to continuing our work on critical issues, including climate action, affordable housing, and sustainable economic development." Furstenau continued.
Adam Olsen, the current MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, expressed his support for the nomination process: "It's been an honour to serve this community for the past seven years. While my decision to step down was not easy, I'm confident that we have exceptional candidates who will carry forward the Green vision for our riding and our province."
Olsen added, "The B.C. Greens have been the conscience of the legislature for the past decades, and I believe our next candidate will continue this work while pushing for the creation and implementation of evidence-based policies that serve all British Columbians"
Residents of Saanich North and the Islands riding are eligible to vote. The chosen nominee will represent the B.C. Greens in the 2024 Fall provincial election.
