B.C. Green Caucus responds to #SickOutBC

December 01, 2020

VICTORIA, B.C. –  In response to today’s #SickOutBC campaign calling on the Government to make changes in schools to protect students, teachers and staff, B.C. Green Party leader MLA Sonia Furstenau for Cowichan Valley has issued the following statement:

“We are now at the point where parents are feeling compelled to pull their children from the classroom to try to get the Government's attention. The BCTF has repeatedly called for changes to classrooms and schools to address concerns raised by teachers, staff, students, and parents.

“This government needs to respond to the solutions being proposed by teachers and staff to ensure the proper support and safety measures are provided. Restoring the operational funding grants to 2019-20 levels would provide flexibility and capacity to school districts and schools to more effectively implement solutions to the challenges teachers are facing, and to more effectively deliver online and hybrid programs, and provide additional mental health supports.

“When we talk about recovery, governments across all jurisdictions need to prioritize long-term planning; the investments we make now will set the direction for the coming decades. Younger generations are our future, and we need to make key investments in our children and education system to ensure they are set up for success. A quality, responsive public education system is the cornerstone of a modern, progressive society. It's the foundation of a sustainable, resilient economy.”
