Andrew Weaver statement on International Workers’ Day

May 01, 2017

KELOWNA B.C. – Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green Party, issued the following statement in recognition of International Workers’ Day. Weaver is in Kelowna and then Vernon today, campaigning with Alison Shaw, candidate for Kelowna-Lake Country and Keli Westgate, candidate for Vernon-Monashee.

“Today we recognize the ongoing fight for labour rights and economic equity in B.C. and across the world,” Weaver said.

“The B.C. Green Party celebrates the work of unions and labour advocates who continue to work to improve conditions for workers. A B.C. Green government would work to ensure that all British Columbians have safe and healthy work conditions.

“The world is changing. Many of the jobs being created today are part-time and insecure. Many workers face the threat of losing their jobs due to automation, and the rise of the ‘gig’ economy has serious ramifications for working conditions. A B.C. Green government will face these emerging challenges head-on, so that the health and wellbeing B.C. workers is assured in the emerging economy.”
