Andrew Weaver statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 25, 2019

VICTORIA, B.C. – Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green Party, issued the following statement in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Sunday:

“Each year on January 27th we reflect on the atrocities of the Holocaust and remember those who suffered and lost their lives. This solemn day is for holding in our hearts those who were persecuted simply due to their religious identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity or political views.

“The horrors experienced during the Holocaust are a stark reminder of the violence bred from hate, discrimination, ignorance and silence. The United Nations has designated this day on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau so that we remember those who were lost and reaffirm our commitment to standing against hatred in all its forms.

“At home and around the world our society continues to grapple with the shameful and hateful attitudes that caused the Holocaust. In the hopes of building a world that fosters diversity and peace it is essential that we not only remember, but actively denounce, all forms of discrimination and hatred.

“Never again.”
