Alex Pope was born in Vancouver and grew up in North Vancouver. He earned a BSc in Computer Science from UBC (1988) and has worked as a computer programmer/analyst/consultant since then, much of the work being related to financial services.
During his time at UBC, Pope was elected to the Computer Science Students’ Society as Secretary and served as Computer Science Representative to the Science Undergraduate Society.
Pope has been active in the bike racing community, participating in and volunteering at events with the Team Escape Velocity Cycling Club and the Burnaby Velodrome Club, as well as serving on the boards of directors of the BC Randonneurs Cycling Club (2005-2011) and Cycling BC (2008-2013).
Pope joined the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Bicycle Advisory Committee as a member in 2008 and served as Chair of the committee from 2010 to 2013. He has also been involved with the local committee for HUB (formerly the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition) since its inception.
He has served on the board of St Andrew’s United Church from 2010-2012 and continued on the board after amalgamation with Hammond United under the new name, Golden Ears United Church, since that time.
Pope married his wife Barb in 1996 and the couple now has three children, aged 17, 15 and 10. The family has been living in Maple Ridge for 15 years, and recently moved from the Haney area to West Central Maple Ridge.
Pope and his family have been long-time supporters of the Haney Farmers’ Market. Since 2015 he has served on the board of the Haney Farmers Market.
Pope has been involved with the Liberal Party of Canada Electoral District Association since 2011, serving as Treasurer from 2011 to 2013, and a Director from 2014 to 2016.
Pope was the candidate in Maple Ridge-Mission for the Green Party of BC in the 2013 provincial election, and has twice put his name forward for Maple Ridge Council.
