Weaver responds to United Steelworkers paying senior B.C. NDP staff salaries

April 23, 2017

VICTORIA B.C. –Today, Andrew Weaver, Leader of the B.C. Green Party, responded to news that the United Steelworkers is paying the salaries of top B.C. NDP campaign staff.

“For months, John Horgan has been campaigning on the corrupting influence of big money in B.C. politics, as he claims to be above it all. Now we find out his senior campaign director and deputy director, who call the shots on their campaign, are being paid for by the United Steelworkers”, said Weaver.

“This election is about trust. How can you trust a leader who publicly talks about how big money corrupts politicians, and then quietly goes into a backroom and strikes a deal with a union to have them pay for his senior staff?

“Trust is earned through actions. I could not in good faith talk about the need to ban big money and then go and accept it myself. To do so would have been hypocritical. That’s why under my leadership, the B.C. Green Party banned corporate and union donations. Our campaign is entirely funded by people. We did it because it’s the right thing to do.”
