[STATEMENT] Weaver responds to failed motion to refer Campaign Finance Reform Act to Finance Committee

VICTORIA, B.C. –  Andrew Weaver, Leader of the B.C. Green Party and MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, has issued the following statement in response to a failed motion made by the Leader of the Official Opposition to refer Bill M213 — Campaign Finance Reform Act to the Select Standing Committee of Finance and Government Services for immediate review:

“Although I am not surprised that the BC Liberal Members did not support this motion to send his bill to committee, I am still disappointed,” Weaver stated. “Sending it to committee would have given Members an opportunity to examine political finance reform in detail, as this exercise is essential to modernizing our democracy and eliminating unfair influences on the electoral process.”

“The B.C. Green Party will continue to support any Member’s bill aimed at banning corporate and union donations, imposing limits on individual donations and restricting donations to residents of B.C., including the bill from the Member for Delta South and the bill from the Leader of the Official Opposition if and when they move to second reading.”
