Janet Fraser

Vancouver-Langara | vla@bcgreens.ca

I live in Marpole in the Vancouver-Langara riding and my husband and I have raised our three school-age children here for fifteen years.

In 2014 I was elected as the only Green trustee on the Vancouver School Board (VSB) and as the other trustees were evenly split between Vision and the NPA I could be the swing vote. As a trustee I always based my decisions on what is best for students and believe my evidence-based and considered decision making, building of respectful relationships and effective advocacy served our students well.

The Minister of Education dismissed all nine locally-elected VSB trustees so I am taking this opportunity to champion public education, good governance, meaningful climate leadership and an inclusive 21st-century economy in my campaign to be the next MLA in my home riding.

I look forward to learning more about the issues and concerns as I meet Vancouver-Langara constituents, and also about their hopes for the future of our city and province. I would be proud to serve and represent our community in the provincial legislature.

About Janet

Janet Fraser was born in the UK and completed all her schooling there, earning B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry from the University of Bristol. She moved to Vancouver in 1993 and worked as a research chemist, project manager and at-home parent for her three children before being elected as a Vancouver School Board (VSB) trustee.

As a UBC postdoctoral researcher, Fraser created well-defined organic structures such as bowls and spheres. At Micrologix Biotech, the focus was on developing new peptide antibiotic medicines to target rapidly emerging multi-drug resistant bacteria. Fraser was a co-inventor of their lead antibiotic candidate and project manager for multiple US FDA clinical trials.

Fraser completed Langara College’s Advanced Project Management Certificate in 2012 and was the program assistant at WWEST, a program to increase the awareness and participation of women and other underrepresented groups in STEM fields of study and careers.

In 2014, Fraser was elected as the only Green trustee on the Vancouver School Board (VSB) and as the other trustees were evenly split between Vision and the NPA, she could be the swing vote. As a trustee, she always based her decisions on what was best for students, effectively advocated for Vancouver’s students and built respectful relationships.
