Regional Representative

Name: Barinder Hans

Email address: barinder@redrhinonetworks.com

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

My primary motivation for seeking election as the Regional Rep for Vancouver, is to help lead the organizational efforts of the Green Party in the region.  As a candidate for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant, I learned a great deal about what type of organization we need to help us succeed for the next election.  I believe, as Regional Rep, I can help develop this organization that can leverage the tremendous people and talent we have in the region.  Over the next 4 years, I believe the Green Party can build a broad base of support so that the next election brings even greater success for the party.  I am excited at the prospects and look forward to helping increase our success.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position:

My experience as a candidate as well as a small-business person lends well to the skills required for a regional rep.  I enjoy building a team environment where people of varying talents and interests can all participate.  I believe I have the fundamental organization, management and leadership skills required for this position. However, I think the most important requirements are vision and passion.  I believe we have a tremendous opportunity to grow our party.  When I spoke to people during the campaign, there seemed to be great appetite for the policies of the Green Party.  I believe our values largely align with the values of most people.  We just need to find a way to engage with more people.

There are great environmental, economic and social challenges before us.  The more organized we are, the better we’ll be at communicating our policies to a greater audience.  With all of us working together, I know we can share our message with everyone in Vancouver and take the Green Party to the next level of success.

In my opinion, the regional team requires a diverse set of skills, perspectives and mindsets. I hope to add a detailed, analytical approach to the team.

Because the Deputy acts in a supportive role to the Regional Representative/Chair, and has no formal duties of his/her own, I would be willing to "fill-in", wherever needed. I can, for example, assist many of the other board positions, with a variety of skills, from technical writing/editing to computer skills.

Communications Chair

Name: Lois Chan-Pedley

Email Address: lois.sm.chan@gmail.com

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

I am passionate about clear, mindfully-crafted communications. I want to use my skill with words to reach out to and educate our constituents about the Green Party of today.

While working as a campaign manager on the 2013 election, I encountered many supporters who didn't know or think they were Green supporters because of the lack of consistent and quality communication in prior years. I want help build a strong brand identity that unifies our supporters and gets the attention of prospective ones. I firmly believe in the core principles of the Party and I am excited to have the opportunity to show British Columbians what these principles can mean to them.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position:

I have more than 15 years of experience with web development and communications in one form or another. I am an experienced writer -- I am both a technical blogger and a creative writer in my free time. From working in companies that ranged from small, private sector startups to the largest federal department, I intimately understand the need for a coordinated approach to external and internal communications. I have seen, firsthand, the results of taking good, strategic communication seriously. My last job at a small tech startup that needed to differentiate itself from other similar business in the industry made me keenly aware of the importance of branding, and I have hands-on experience applying branding principles in our products. Lastly, as a member of the Green Party's Communications Team, I am in a strong position to guide the efforts of the Vancouver region's communications.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

I wish to help the Green Party succeed in the future. I believe that there is a lot of room for Green improvements, locally, nationally, and even internationally. Being an important part of the Vancouver Regional Committee is first step in this change.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position:

I have abundant experience in organizing academic, government, and recreational events. I have also kept active in sports by organizing and managing two to three intramural sports teams per semester. Prior to graduate school, I worked in the U.S. Senate, where part of my work dealt with recruitment and training of volunteers and interns.

Outreach Chair

Name: Sarah Conroy

Email Address: smrconroy@hotmail.com

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

The Green Party did a phenomenal job in the last election. It needs to maintain that momentum and continue growing as a party in terms of organizing, fundraising, and getting its message out. I feel passionately about developing a provincial party that offers the people of B.C. a viable alternative to the Liberal/NDP dichotomy and that inspires people to get out and vote. This is why I am seeking a position on the Regional Committee - to help keep the Green Party’s momentum going with my energy and enthusiasm.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position:

The Green Party has a lot to offer community organizations and local businesses in terms of its policies and approach to politics, and the outreach chair position requires someone who is capable of building relationships and getting that message out. I am a young professional and a community volunteer with strong roots in the Vancouver-Mount Pleasant community, and as such I believe that I have the skills and the dedication necessary to fulfill this role. I am looking forward to building up a network of contacts that are able to assist with fundraising and community events in support of the Green Party.

Membership Chair

Name: Drina Read

Email address:  drinaread@yahoo.ca

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

As a long-time party member, I have experience with membership, outreach, and promotion.  I have lived in Vancouver for over 25 years.  I ran for the party twice as a candidate in Vancouver-West End, as well as the former Vancouver-Burrard Constituency.  As the longest serving BC Council member, I have represented party members for 12 years in several different capacities.  I have served as Vancouver Regional Rep, Vice Chair, Administration Chair, Research and Policy Chair and the Information and Privacy Officer.  I am currently serving on the membership committee.  I have worked for years as a volunteer to organize the Vancouver Region.  I have kept membership lists, invited members to events throughout the year, and signed up new members.

My passion for the Green Party is my raison d-être.  I believe that the only way to change society is to change the government.  We have the best policies and the best values.  We need to educate the public about what we have to offer and to encourage them to exercise their right to vote Green, without fear of intimidation, and to feel good about voting Green now and in the future.  This is the only way to save our planet.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position:

Please see my previous response as it covers the same territory.

Policy Chair

Name: Matthew Pedley

Email Address: matthew.pedley@gmail.com

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

I am seeking this position so that I may facilitate the advancement of the Green Party policy in preparation for the next provincial election. The Green Party policy has been developed piecemeal over the past 30 years of the party's history. These policies need many improvements to demonstrate to the public that we are the party that is needed to lead British Columbia towards a better future for everyone. I would also like to use this position to further develop my understanding of the Green Party platform in advance of the next election so I may be a more informed candidate.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position:

Having ran in the May 2013 election as a candidate for the Green Party I have a solid understanding of Green Party policy and how it is perceived by both our supporters and the general public. As a Professional Engineer I am analytical and thorough. I will facilitate development of detailed policy that adheres to the ten core principles while also gaining popular support with voters. I will bring the S.M.A.R.T theory to policy making thus creating policies that are clear, concise and deliverable.

Name: Stephen Rees

Email Address:  stephenrees@me.com

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

There are more people living in this region than the rest of BC. Electoral success here is critical to the Party. We currently lack organization at the regional and constituency levels, and must first build at the regional level and identify where we can elect the next Green MLA. The region itself faces the challenge of a referendum on transportation funding and we must be active in that campaign, if there is to be a sustainable region.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position on the Regional Committee:

I have worked on policy analysis and development for regional and provincial governments here and in the UK - more than 40 years of experience. I have an advanced degree in Urban & Regional Planning from LSE. For the last seven years I have run a successful blog on regional transportation and land use issues (http://stephenrees.wordpress.com). I have extensive experience in organizing and leading committees including the BC Energy Aware Committee (now the Community Energy Association). I lead the successful team that created the regional Urban Showcase Program which won federal funding to demonstrate successful initiatives in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from personal transportation. I was a member of the Livable Region Coalition which campaigned against freeway expansion in this region.

Name: Sean Iles

Email Address: grenada_sean@yahoo.com

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are seeking a position on the Regional Committee:

I have been a member of the Green Party since as early as 1983.  I try to lead a green lifestyle because I believe it is important to be respectful of the environment and the other organisms who share this planet.  I was the Official Agent for the Green Party candidate in my riding, Vancouver South, in the 2011 federal election and I served on the Survey Team in the recent provincial election.  I want to contribute in a meaningful way to the development of the Green Party of BC as a driving political force in the future of this province.

Please write a 200 word statement about why you are a good fit for this position:

I have an interest in the formation of party policy that will allow me to devote sufficient time to the position to fulfill the duties required effectively.  I have the administrative skills to perform the functions efficiently.  I am presently employed as a lawyer, concentrating my practice on immigration, corporate and commercial law.  I was a founding director and eventually president of the SPARK Film Group Society, a showcase and networking organisation to promote the careers of independent filmmakers in Vancouver, so I am no stranger to the functions necessary to make an active committee function smoothly.
